It’s Not About the Money

As an estate planning attorney I spend a lot of time talking to people about their money or other assets.  But as I was blessed to spend several days this last week with my wife and children at a family reunion I was reminded again that good estate planning is not about the money.  The reason we plan our affairs is to truly to show our love to those we care about.Planning allows us to put in place a structure that will allow our loved ones to make an orderly transition of our assets and affairs upon death or disability.  Planning allows us to give instructions concerning whether or not we would want life support terminated and under what conditions.  Planning allows us to identify who will care for minor children or others under our care. Planning allows us an opportunity to share our values about family, religions, work, money, etc.  Most importantly, planning allows us to put in place a structure that will minimize the likelihood that those we leave behind will destroy cherished family relationships because of misunderstandings about our wishes.I love to help people with planning because of the peace of mind that comes when a plan is in place.  I love to help people with planning because of the peace that comes to their loved ones when a well designed plan is called into action.  Planning is a gift we give to those we love and I am blessed to be able to share in that gift with so many families.
